As Jaipur city celebrates kite flying on Makar Sankranti on Monday, police and animal lovers have geared up to do all they can to save the birds from harmful manja (glass-coated kite string).

While the police had conducted a drive and checked manja-selling shops to find if the banned manjha was being sold, avian lovers and NGOs are also gearing up with medical facilities for injured birds.

Rajasthan police have issued an advisory to the public, while also pleading through social media to not use Chinese manja this Sankranti as it is not only harmful to people but also to birds and small animals as well.

The state police's official Twitter handle tweeted on the use of banned manja and urged public to use the normal manja. The tweet read: "Do not use the glass-coated manja this Sankranti and help taking care of birds."

The Director General Of Police, Kapil Garg, also released a video message, which was shared in hundreds of groups, asking people to be safe during the festivals.

"I wish everyone a Happy Sankranti. It is seen that incidents of accidents increase during festivals and we wish people to be safe. Also, banned manja should not be used as it slits people's throat... I hope that the banned manja is not used and people celebrate the festival with the utmost safety," the DGP said in the advisory.

City police cracked down on the Chinese kite string on Friday as teams from all police stations of the Jaipur Commissionerate surveyed their areas and inspected all kite shops. While an extensive search was conducted, shockingly, not even a single unit of the Chinese manja was found. Cops now aim to conduct surprise raids at random shops to find if the manja is being hidden and is being sold through other channels.
