The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) wrote a letter to the West Bengal government on Monday, demanding an explanation why the state’s home department has not taken any action against top police officers involved in the Nandigram firing.

This is the third such letter from the CBI, reminding the state government that the investigating agency is not being able to prosecute six IPS officers who have been mentioned in the chargesheet without the state administration’s approval.

As many as 14 people had died in the police firing at Nandigram on March 14, 2007.

The Supreme Court had earlier asked for an observation report from CBI regarding the Nandigram firing case. The agency couldn’t interrogate the involved IPS officers after the home department of the state government did not give an approval.

The agency in its letter has requested the state administration to initiate a departmental enquiry against these six IPS officers and even allow the agency to question them.

In its chargesheet, CBI had named 37 accused, all private persons, and sought sanction to prosecute Debashis Boral and Satyajit Bandopadhyay, both additional SPs, and Sekhar Roy, sub-inspector Nandigram, sources said.

The agency had also recommended disciplinary action against the then Inspector General Arun Gupta, and the then SP G Anil Srinivas, both IPS officers, to the state government.

In its chargesheet, the CBI has booked all those named under Indian Penal Code sections related to rioting (147, 148), unlawful assembly (149), voluntarily causing hurt to deter and public servant from his duty (332) among others.
