Amidst the Congress party's promise to provide reservation to Patidar s in Gujarat, the Maratha Kranti Morcha (MKM) wants the BJP-led government in Maharashtra to give them a written timeline for providing them a quota. MKM, which had organised 58 mook morchas (silent processions) across the state to press for reservation in education and jobs, will file a petition in this regard with the Bombay High Court.

MKM co-ordinator, Vinod Patil, said, "The government has been engaged in mere talk; there has been no action so far. MKM has never demanded a quota in politics; it has been pursuing reservation in the education and employment sector. Instead of taking a concrete decision, the government is playing safe and saying a decision is possible only after the Backward Classes Commission submits its report. However, we think it does not have to wait for any such report and can go ahead on its own."

Patil said that since the government is dilly-dallying, MKM will appeal to the High Court to direct the State to give a specific timeline for its decision.

MKM's move comes at a time when the State has appointed a cabinet sub-committee, chaired by revenue minister Chandrakant Patil, to look into the legal and administrative issues pertaining to the Maratha reservation and its feasibility.

One BJP minister, who is a member of the cabinet sub-committee, said, "The committee's formation took place after an MKM delegation met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on August 9, seeking an early decision on reservation.

The committee has so far held two meetings, and another is slated for December 17. Fadnavis has already told MKM that the Backward Classes Commission will carry out a study and examine the feasibility of providing the quota.''
The minister pointed out that during the Congress-NCP government, the Backward Classes Commission could not submit its report due to lack of a unanimous view on quota. Subsequently, the government appointed a committee chaired by former industries minister Narayan Rane, who recommended 16% quota for the Maratha community in educational institutions and jobs.

Moreover, the BJP government had filed a 2,800-page affidavit in the High Court in December 2016 to legally justify the quota request, saying it did not violate constitutional provisions. The affidavit was filed in response to a Public Interest Litigation.
