Ending speculations, main opposition National Conference on Tuesday announced to go solo in the next assembly elections and promised to bring legislation in the assembly for Regional Autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir.

"We won't have alliance with any party. A stable, strong and people friendly government is the answer to problems facing Jammu and Kashmir", said Dr Farooq Abdullah, former J&K chief minister and president of National Conference while addressing the workers rally at Udhampur in Jammu division.

Reigniting the debate on the autonomy, Abdullah promised to bring legislation in the assembly to restore the regional autonomy in the state. "Immediately after forming the government, National Conference will bring legislation in the first assembly session with regards to regional autonomy. This will empower every segment of the society and every region and sub-region politically and economically", he said.

National Conference government of Farooq Abdullah had passed the autonomy resolution in the Legislative Assembly on June 26, 2000, but it was summarily rejected by the then NDA government lead by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Under the autonomy resolution, Jammu and Kashmir shall enjoy complete autonomy on all issues except defence, foreign policy, currency and communication, which will lie with the centre.

National Conference and Congress had stitched a post-poll alliance in 2008 which however crumbled before the 2014 elections. However, both parties had to bite the dust in 2014 elections with PDP and BJP sweeping the polls in Jammu and Kashmir. The next assembly elections are due in 2021

"Party was confident of a massive mandate on its own, given support of the people at ground zero", Abdullah said. Lambasting the BJP for what he called dividing the nation on religion, Farooq said this dispensation has negated the vision of freedom fighters who gave sacrifices to free India from the shackles of British. "At that point of time, the freedom stalwarts did not think in terms of Hindus, Muslims or Sikhs but their paramount mission was to seek freedom for India, the abode of all faiths", he said

The National Conference President also referred to the circumstances leading to safe passage of terrorists at Kandhar during the tenure of Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee. "The situation has now taken such a turn that India's pleas in the United Nations over declaration of Maulana Masood Azhar as a global terrorist is being vetoed by China", he said.
