West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who is on a five-day trip to North Bengal, brought up the subject of ‘kabristan’ (burial grounds) and ‘samshan ghat’ (crematorium) during her speech at a public meeting at Jalpaiguri district on Tuesday. Interestingly, she had criticised when Prime Minister Narendra Modi had referred to ‘kabristan’ and ‘samshan ghat’ last month in his speech, campaigning for the BJP candidates in UP Assembly elections.

“There are about 2,000 burial grounds which have been renovated by our government. There are about 25 to 30 thousand crematoriums across the state, and no one had paid any attention to those in the last 5-6 years. We will renovate those. We also have plans to put up an electric chulli (electric cremator) in all towns of Bengal,” she said during the speech.

Her comment has drawn a lot of sharp reactions from leaders of all the Opposition parties. State Congress president and party Lok Sabha MP Adhir Chowdhury said that it was not surprising. “She is the prototype of Narendra Modi, only in female version. She has decided to play the Hindu card ahead of the BJP in order to woo voters for the next Panchayat elections. It is pre-emptive and assertive communalism,” Chowdhury told DNA.

CPI(M) MP Md Salim said Mamata was ‘following the footsteps of Modi’. “It is the tried-and-tested footstep of Modi ‘bhai’ which ‘didi bhai’ is following. Putting up and maintaining a crematorium and graveyard is the work of a panchayat or municipal body. Unfortunately, in our country the PM and the CM have to go around announcing these to attract votes,” Salim said talking to DNA.

BJP state president Dilip Ghosh too was quick to latch on to it. “If talking about ‘samshan ghat’ and ‘kabristan’ made Modi communal, why is didi resorting to such things?” Ghosh asked.

Earlier at an administrative meeting on Tuesday with the district administration, Mamata had said that there will be zero tolerance in case of child trafficking. “This place is very sensitive, and we will have to be vigilant to avoid any repetition of such case,” she said during the meeting.
