A case of sexual assault of a 16-year-old speech-and-hearing impaired girl in a remote village in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district which rocked the state in 2014 has taken a curious turn with the CB-CID police dismissing charges of the assault and booked the victim and her mother in a public nuisance charge.

The CB-CID filed charge sheet against the victim and her mother before Krishnagiri judicial magistrate court booking them under IPC section 160 (public nuisance).

“An ordinary case of street brawl, which can be termed as an affray as per the terminology of the IPC, has been blown out of proportion by the complainant into a rape case and the local police who conducted investigation also buckled under extraneous pressure and filed charge sheet under section 376 of IPC which has been correctly quashed by the Madras HC,” the CB-CID said.

M Veerabathrappa, father of the victim, in his original complaint alleged that his daughter was gang-raped when she was returning after giving food to him on the evening of December 25 as a revenge to a quarrel between his family and the accused.
