Launching a scathing attack on the central government, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the state government would pull out of the Ayushman Bharat health protection scheme because the Centre was trying to take all the credit of the health project when the state shares 40 per cent of the contribution towards it.

"A card is being sent to everyone through the post office, saying I helped with your health insurance card. How do you do it? Where do you get the money? Where is your budget? The state also pays 40 per cent of the amount. It is not only the Centre's money. I withdraw from the project from today. You have no right to give people false assurance and cheat them ahead of the elections. I saw the letter today. The name of the Prime Minister is there and the logo of the project is similar to that of the BJP logo," she said at an event of laying the foundation stone of Kanyashree University at Krishnanagar in Nadia district.

Within a couple of hours after she made the statement, an official communication was sent to the Prime Minister's Office by West Bengal Chief Secretary Malay Kumar De. Sources said that the letter was strongly worded, informing the PMO of the state's stand.

Under the scheme, poor families are provided with a health coverage of Rs 5,00,000.

Mamata alleged that Modi is indulging in dirty politics and that the Centre is running a parallel government in the states. "Government money is being spent to campaign for the party. They are making it look like they are doing all the welfare projects themselves. There seems to be no need of the state governments. Does it mean you are running a parallel government in the states? I have all the documents. Anyone can challenge me. I am clearly saying, don't play with fire," she lashed out.

She added that the banks had been looted and people had been robbed in the name of notebandi where as institutions such as RBI and CBI were destroyed. "History is being distorted. All names are being changed. What do you think of yourself? Would you do whatever you want to?" she asked.

Reacting to Mamata's speech, BJP national secretary and former party state president Rahul Sinha counter alleged that Mamata is trying to turn West Bengal into a separate country. "The state is getting its share of tax money as usual. She wants the whole amount. She is indicating that Bengal is an independent nation and she will not give any money to the Centre," Sinha said. Referring to a picture of Modi, he said, "If there is any award for putting up pictures, Mamata Banerjee's name would enter the Guiness Books. She has her picture everywhere, from highway to toilets."
