The Delhi traffic police has started work to decongest Mathura Road, a key link connecting the Capital to south Delhi and the satellite town of Faridabad. The road was identified, by the Lieutenant Governor and the AAP government, as one of the 29 major bottlenecks that needed to be smoothened.

According to the overhaul plan, the 20 km stretch between Neela Gumbad and Badarpur flyover will be recarpeted to remove the patchwork on the road and hence increase the speed of vehicles.

The police have also roped in the civic body to create a dedicated parking space before Nizamuddin police station and the Hazrat Nizamuddin dargah in order to remove the layers of vehicles parked. These vehicles cover half of the three-lane road.

"There is a major chaos created by vehicles parked outside. All vehicles including four-wheelers, buses, auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws and two-wheelers crowd the entire stretch. A parking lot will help clear up the road space and reduce the jams here," said a senior officer.

The stretch witnesses heavy vehicular traffic as well as pedestrian movement throughout the day. Also, a number of industrial units and slum clusters are situated on both sides of the road adding to the congestion.

The traffic police have asked the Public Works Department to construct foot-over bridges (FOB) at Aali Village and Ashram Chowk --- the two major intersections on the stretch.

"We have roped in the road owning agency to build FOBs to ease out pedestrian movement on the road. Pedestrians crossing over to other carriageway often hold up the traffic as well as cause accidents. The bridge will help remove obstructions and allow free flow of traffic," the officer said.

The Delhi government had last year proposed to build an underpass at Ashram Chowk as well as two elevated corridors or twin flyovers between Ashram Chowk and Aali Village near Badarpur. However, they are yet to start work.

"Some roads are facing the problem of unauthorised parking, and some roads will see refurbishment or re-routing if needed. We have written to the government regarding the work, and have sent our recommendations. Since it is the road owning agencies which have to take up the engineering work, we hope to put the project on fast track," the officer added.
