A man shot an 18-year-old girl at a busy marketplace in Gurugram's Palam Vihar area late on Tuesday night. Highlighting the apathy of the passersby, an eyewitness later told police that not a single person rushed to help the girl, who lay critically wounded for more than 20 minutes. She was taken to Columbia Asia Hospital after the arrival of the police, but succumbed to her injuries an hour later.

The girl's parents have alleged that Pawan Kumar, 28, was behind the crime as he had been stalking and harassing the girl for the past six months.

The incident took place around 9.30 pm. The victim, identified as Gunjan Kumari, was returning to her home after completing her part-time shift at a Patanjali store in Sector-21 of Palam Vihar.

According to eye witnesses, a man wearing black clothes confronted the girl and then fired two shots from a close range. He then fled from the spot with an accomplice, who was waiting for him on a motorcycle. The entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera inside the store.

"We had tried to register a complaint about the man (Pawan) at the Bajhera police post three months ago but no action was taken," Gunjan's father Chandrama Singh said. He works with a courier company and had been living in Gurugram with his family for the past 11 years.

Gunjan was pursuing BA from Delhi University's (DU) School of Open Learning. The family hailed from Ambedkarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh (UP). According to the family members, even after Gunjan's multiple refusals to have a relationship, Pawan, who hails from Jhajjar district of Haryana, pressurised her continuously.

According to the police, Pawan is a resident of the Chauma Village. He had known Gunjan for the last two years and is currently absonding.

ACP Jai Singh, who is investigating the matter, told DNA: "The police has deployed teams at various places to nab the accused. We are going through the CCTV footage but the shooter's face is not clearly visible."

When asked about the harassment complaint made by the girl's parents a few months ago, the ACP said: "The matter is under investigation. No evidence of such a complaint has been found yet, but we are certainly checking it."

Gurgaon Police said a case has been registered under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Pawan at the Palam Vihar police station. Meanwhile, Gunjan's body was handed over to the family after post-mortem.
