The work on the Signature Bridge in Delhi has picked up pace after a team of engineers was called in from Germany to expedite the process. Delhi Tourism Minister Rajender Pal Gautam visited the bridge on Saturday and instructed the officials to complete the work by December, 2017.

"Bearings on the bridge have been attached and another engineer from Germany will be coming by next week. Officials have been instructed not to miss the deadline this time," Gautam said.

The bridge, which was supposed to be ready for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, has been called a white elephant by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. Rs 1,131 crore was sanctioned for the project but Rs 1,575 crore has already been spent.

"We have been waiting for the pending funds for more than two years now. A total of Rs 331 crore is pending and we have been asking the Delhi government to get it cleared. Once the amount is cleared from the Cabinet, it will be transferred to us and we can go ahead with the work," a senior PWD official said.
