Security was tightened around the border areas of the national Capital on Wednesday after the Intelligence Bureau (IB) received an alert from the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Police that a group of jihadis was moving towards Delhi in three vehicles. The alert stated that the terrorists, who were planning a series of bomb blasts, had apparently reached Ghaziabad.

The security forces and police immediately started a vehicle check and combing of adjoining village areas. Security forces of neighbouring states were also alerted about the input, after which local police in villages on Delhi's outskirts carried out combing operations. Security arrangements at important installations, such as the Delhi Metro, railway stations, inter-state bus terminals, and the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) were also reviewed and stepped-up significantly.

"We have received an alert from the IB. Capital is always on a high security due to VIP movements, and necessary measures will be taken accordingly. Vehicles entering the city are being watched," a senior Delhi Police officer said.

Sources in the Delhi Police also said that surprise raids may follow in many parts of the city. Additional pickets have been raised within the city and near border areas, which may lead to traffic congestion, they said.

Besides, a hawk-eye vigil is being maintained at all Delhi Metro stations, specially on men in uniform. "Frisking and passenger profiling has been further tightened, leading to long queues at busy stations during peak hours. Following the alert, a security review meeting headed by a Deputy Inspector General was held at CISF's DMRC headquarters in Shastri Park," a senior CISF officer said.

Sources said the meeting was held to check the preparedness of the security personnel, after which extra deployment has been ensured, along with a striking reserve of CISF men. Senior CISF officers requested the commuters to cooperate.

"Dummy checks are also being performed by the intelligence agencies and Delhi Metro Rail Police to check the CISF's level of preparedness. The presence of the Quick Response Teams (QRT) at Metro stations has also been increased and strategies, keeping in mind all possibilities, have been chalked out. Presence of anti-sabotage teams, including dog and bomb squads, has been increased manifold," a senior officer said.

In addition, security at the Delhi airport has also been stepped-up. According to a senior officer, all vehicles entering the airport are being strictly frisked and an Anti-Terror Squad of the IGI Delhi Police has been alerted.

The city was earlier put on a high alert last Wednesday, following the London attack, wherein a lone wolf attacker first sped across the Westminster Bridge in a car ramming into many pedestrians and then smashed in to the gates of the Parliament building. He went on to stab a policeman who tried to stop him, before being shot dead by the police.

Then on Thursday, terrorists attacked a police vehicle during a patrol in Behbagh region of Shopian district in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
