In remembrance of martyrs, Delhi Police has planned to construct ‘Amar Police Jyoti’ which will be lit forever and will remain a source of inspiration to the police staff.

The force has planned to build the memorial on line of Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate. Amar Jawan Jyoti is made of black marble plinth, with reversed L1A1 Self-loading rifle, capped by war helmet, bound by four urns, each with the permanent light from compressed natural gas flames.

It was erected in wake of Liberation of Bangladesh in December 1971 to commemorate Indian soldiers martyred at that time. The documents accessed by DNA states, “The Amar Police Jyoti (like Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate) will be made which will be enlightened forever and will remain a source of inspiration to the police staff.”

The Special Commissioner of Police heading Administration department TN Mohan, has recently stated that the matter to construct the Amar Police Jyoti has been discussed after a team of Delhi Police officer returned from Mumbai. On the directions of the then Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajiv Ranjan went to Mumbai for a week to study the functioning of their police department in November last year. Ranjan came and submitted a report wherein it was decided to construct a Amar Police Jyoti which the Maharashtra police had built in remembrance of police personnel martyred in 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

“After much discussion, it is decided that this will be constructed in new police headquarters,” the documents stated.  The 18-storeyed complex at Jai Singh Marg behind the Parliament Street Police Station near Connaught Place will have state-of-the-art facilities including modern communication systems and security apparatus. The new building has to be built at a cost of Rs 1,095 crore under Public-Private Partnership. The contract for the new building has been awarded to Unity Infraprojects Ltd, which is a Mumbai-based firm. Further, the force is also mulling to inscribe names of Delhi Police martyrs.

Total 17 police personnel were killed in the line of duty between September 1, 2015 to August 31, 2016.
