Potholes make a comeback on Bangalore roads

When the BBMP asphalted the 2-km stretch between Navrang Theatre and Karnataka Soap Factory on Dr Rajkumar Road in 2011, motorists had a prospect of looking forward to a smooth drive. However, potholes soon began surfacing on this arterial road. Now, the BBMP is planning to asphalt it again. Surprisingly, action has not been taken against the erring contractor.

Last month, the BBMP’s major works committee members inspected the road and expressed dissatisfaction over its condition. Committee chairman HG Ramachandra had said that strict action should be initiated. A BBMP source said according to the terms and conditions of the tender, if potholes develop within three years, the contractor will have to incur the expenses to repair the road.

But instead of penalising the contractor, the BBMP has decided to asphalt the road and more money in the process. BBMP west division joint commissioner Shankar Patil said the civic body will begin asphalting work after the BBMP budget is presented. “I have inspected the road and noticed that it is filled with potholes. We have decided to take up road improvement. The repair will be taken up in the second week of April,” he said. Currently, the stretch between Navrang Theatre and Karnataka Soap Factory has more than 30 potholes.  Vehicle movement has slowed down, and motorists, in order to dodge potholes, end up moving in a zigzag fashion.
