Karnataka will lead the way for other states by announcing an independent policy on animation and gaming on October 18.

This was revealed by MN Vidyashankar, principal secretary of IT, BT and state government, at the Karnataka Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (KAVGC) summit on Thursday.

He said, details of the new policy would be available on the inaugural day of IT.biz.

Former president APJ Abdul Kalam would be present on the occasion.

“We’ve been toying with this idea for long. We’ll be the first state in the country to announce such a policy,” said Vidyashankar.

"We were supposed to announce it today (Thursday) but due to certain reasons, it was not possible,” he said.

The policy on animation and gaming would focus on their creative and technical aspects.

Balakrishna MR, president of Association of Bangalore Animation Industry (ABAI), said the exclusive policy would help the industry in a big way. The growing trend towards inter-connectivity between economies, enterprises, societies and governments was giving rise to a new order of development, he said.

Karnataka has more than 20 training institutes imparting AVGC-related training over 60 campuses.

According to a study in 2010, about 10,000 students are undergoing training. This figure will touch 25,000 in two years. Over 2,000 professionals are employed in the education and animation production units related to web and content development in the state.

Vidyashankar said the summit held this year jointly by the department of IT, BT and ST, Government of Karnataka, along with the ABAI would be a two-day event from next year. “From our side, we will give whatever support is required in terms of funding, style and content of the programme,” he said.
