Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda on Sunday vowed to make Karnataka a corruption-free state.

He said that he will  take a decision on the ministers allegedly tainted by illegal mining after going through the report to be filed by a three-member panel of officials set up to study the Lokayukta findings on the issue.

The three-member panel headed by the additional chief secretary has been asked to file an action to be taken report on the Lokayukta findings on illegal mining in the state.

The Chief Minister’s clarification came at a press conference when DNA asked him what validity his statement to wage war on corruption would carry given the fact that there were at least four tainted individuals in his cabinet.

“I have decided to wait for the action to be taken report and outcome of cases filed by various law enforcement bodies on the fate of the tainted ministers. But about one particular minister whose name has been mentioned in the Lok Ayukta report on the mining muddle, the reference is only indirect and there is no direct accusation. Anyway, let us wait for the report before casting aspersions. The officials, going through the Lok Ayukta report, have said that two sons of a Bengaluru Somanna were carrying out illegal mining. We do not yet know who the individual is,” Gowda said.

“I am serious about making Karnataka corruption-free. I have told my relatives and my family not to entertain any request from relatives to bring to me files pertaining to their matters. If I am to fight corruption and nepotism, it has to start from me,” Gowda said.

On more powers to the Lok Ayukta, the chief minister said, “I have no two minds about giving more powers to the Lokayukta but that is a decision the chief minister cannot take unilaterally. It has to be done through a series of administrative reforms, but I am willing to set up a committee of top officials of the state to study and recommend the kind of powers that the Lok Ayukta needs to be more effective in the state to make it a corruption-less state.”

Gowda is also contemplating having ‘a tea party’ once in a week or a fortnight with opposition leaders to take their views on public issues.

“This way, the government and the people will get the benefit of more minds applying themselves for improving administration and tackling problems in the public domain,” he said. The Chief Minister also appealed to the media not to seek his opinions and statements on every small happening in the state.

“Many times, the statements given at the nick of the time will carry wrong ideas and interpretations by the media sometimes go awry,” he said.

“I’ve decided to keep the media informed of all government work through weekly briefings without fail,” he said.
