Do you feel dizzy in your new office? Do your colleagues have the same complaints? Well, the problem may not be with you, but with the building where you spend eight to 10 hours every day. You may be a victim of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS).

Nausea, dizziness and headache can be symptoms of SBS.

Experts said several buildings, both commercial and residential, can trigger SBS, which often leads to respiratory track complications and asthma. Lack of oxygen, presence of carbon-dioxide and volatile organic compounds (VOC) emitted by carpet, paint, and furniture can cause SBS. “The design may be proper, but if the installation or operation is not proper, then it may cause SBS,” said D Nirmal Ram, member of Indian Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers.

A wrong air-conditioning system with no provision to draw fresh air to reduce the odours and pollutants can be the main culprit in triggering SBS.
