Afforestation is the buzz word this year. And the state will see plantation of about one crore seedlings in protected areas of industries in the coming year ,starting from the World Environment Day, which will be observed on Sunday.

This was announced by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) on Friday.

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is ‘Forests: Nature at Your Service’. “Keeping in tune with the theme, this year, we would like to concentrate on tree plantation in industrial areas.

The initiative was started last year, and we have successfully planted about 57 lakh seedlings there. This year, we are planning to plant about a crore saplings,” said AS Sadashivaiah, chairman of KSPCB.

In order to take this forward, KSPCB has tied up with forest department and Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB).

“KIADB has agreed to plant seedlings in all their campuses,” said Sadashivaiah.

Speaking to DNA, he said the forest department had allotted Rs10 crore to KIADB for afforestation within industrial belts.

“Every industry must make provision to plant five rows of trees around the campus and also along the roadside. Several industries are in the process of booking their favourite trees. We are also encouraging sandalwood plantation within the secured industrial belts,” he said.

Green awards
That apart, KSPCB will be awarding three individuals and three institutions from all over Karnataka for their contribution to ecology.

“About 28 individuals and institutions were nominated for this and awardees will get cash worth Rs1 lakh. Environment does not belong to the government. It belongs to people and they should take care of it,” said Kanvaar Pal, secretary, ecology and environment, KSPCB.

In order to generate awareness about environment and ecology among children, KSPCB is launching a quarterly magazine for various eco clubs in the state. The magazine will be launched on Sunday.

“There are about 4,735 eco clubs at school level and 1,018 eco clubs at pre-university level. This magazine will be distributed in all these places,” said Pal.
