Gujarat government has pressed a panic button to accelerate participation in Ahmedabad Shopping Festival (ASF) beginning on January 17. With just one week left for the festival, registration of shopkeepers was just a trickle of what was expected. Now, the registration fee has been reduced from Rs 1,999 per shopkeeper to Rs 700 and also waived of for street vendors.

Till Wednesday, registration had reached just 3,000-mark against an initial target of 10,000. State chipped in and formed an 18-member committee under Shailesh Patwari, former president of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) to accelerate registration and increase sponsorship. On Thursday, registration fees were slashed for shopkeepers and waived it off for street vendors. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) which was more of a facilitation body is now driving the festival.

"AMC is the nodal agency for the festival. We are taking care of city beautification. Major roads and monuments will be illuminated. The festival has been organized so that citizens can shop quality products at discounted rates. So, far more than 10,000 retailers and shoppers have been registered," said AMC commissioner.

"Work of ASF is now on a war footing. All business associations are told to enrol their members. We have roped in sponsors for smaller players, who cannot afford registration," said Patwari.

Restaurants to offer 15% discount:

Restaurant and eateries in Ahmedabad will offer 15 per cent flat discount to customers during Ahmedabad Shopping Festival, said Rohit Khanna, member of Core Committee of Hotel and Restaurant Association – Gujarat. "Online portals like Zomato and Swiggy are anyways taking 20 per cent commission from us. It is better to offer the discount directly to the customers. This way people will revive their habit of coming to the hotels and restaurants for food," he said.
