Soon there will be more opportunities for children in remote and rural areas to get education in English medium, as the central government is keen on improving English and Science education in the country.

A Group of Secretaries looking into the roadmap for education and social development in the country has recommended to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) that there should be at least one English medium school in every block across the country, and that Science education should be available everywhere within a radius of 5 km.

The proposal has been taken seriously by the ministry which will prepare a roadmap. The panel has also suggested that English be made a compulsory language starting from Class 6 in all schools. However, this is already done in many non-English medium schools across the country.

“English as a language is taught to students from Class 6 onwards, but that does not make them any better in the subject. Therefore, the ministry is more keen on the idea of improving the number of English medium schools,” said senior official from HRD Ministry

The move is important in light of lack of a English education in the country. According to the ministry’s own data, only 17 per cent of school going children in India go to English-medium schools, around 49 per cent are enroled in Hindi-medium schools, and the remaining 33 per cent are enroled in other regional languages.

For the Science education proposal, guidelines are already in place under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) to all the states to facilitate them for establishment, maintenance and management of Integrated Science and Mathematics Laboratory for Secondary Stage (Classes 9 and 10).

A Group of Secretaries was formed to look into ‘Education and Social Development’ in the country where they were asked to look into a mid-term review of major policies and schemes of each Ministry and suggest realignment of physical targets, financial outlays and implementation strategies up to the year 2018-19, wherever considered necessary.

HINDI TOPS

With around 49 per cent school going children study in Hindi-medium schools, the language still continues to be the prime medium of instruction in schools across India.
