A look at the major sporting events that were cancelled in 2020 due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

The coronavirus outbreak had got the whole world to a stop after its rapid spread. From March 2020, many sporting events across the world were affected.

The coronavirus cases worldwide got major sporting events cancelled or postponed. The most significant one that was due to take place in Japan this summer was the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

However, the International Olympic Committee and Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have postponed the event to next year, where it will now take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021.

Let's take a look at the major sporting events that were cancelled in 2020.

1. Cricket

The men's T20 World Cup was due to take place in Australia this year from October but was cancelled. However, the windows for the next three ICC men's events were out in order to bring clarity to the calendar.

 

The sport has been given the best possible opportunity over the next three years to recover from the disruption caused by the novel virus.

 

The windows for the three major ICC men's events are as follows:

ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 will be held October – November 2021 with the final on November 14, 2021

ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 will be held October – November 2022 with the final on November 13, 2022

ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 will be held in India October – November 2023 with the final on November 16, 2023

2. Tokyo 2020 Olympics

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics which was to take place this year was cancelled and postponed by the International Olympic Committee and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. 

 

The decision was made after IOC came under increasing pressure from athletes, national Olympic bodies and sports federations.

 

The event will now take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021. 

3. Tennis

The 2020 Wimbledon tennis championships was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, the All England Club had announced on April 1.

 

It was the first time the championships, which was due to take place between June 28 and July 11, was called off since World War II.

 

The BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells has been cancelled as well as the Xi'an Open, which was scheduled for April 13 to 19, and Kunming Open, pencilled for April 27 to May 3. Both events were to take place in China.

4. Basketball

Europe's top two club basketball competitions were terminated without naming any winners due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organisers EuroLeague Basketball had said on May 25. 

 

"Having explored every possible option, the Executive Board has made the decision to cancel the 2019-20 EuroLeague and EuroCup," the organising body said on its official Twitter account.

5. Other sports

Weightlifting:

The Asian Championships, scheduled to take place in Uzbekistan from April 16 to 25, have been cancelled.

 

Paralympics:

The postponed Paralympic Games will run from August 24-September 5, 2021.
