1. Potholes of Nighoj

Nighoj is a village situated near Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra and is famous for its natural potholes near Kukdi riverbed. It is said that these potholes were formed many years ago due to rainfall resulting river Ghodnadi to flow in great force causing erosion. It is considered to be one of the largest potholes in Asia. The place is a natural beauty but since it is not very famous it does not have much tourist attraction.

How to reach? It is 199 kilometers away from Mumbai. Pune is the nearest station.

2. Ajanta Caves

Ancient sculptures and paintings of Lord Buddha and Buddhist teachings make Ajanta caves worth visiting. It was built in 2nd century BCE and holds a great historical significance. Ajanta caves are world famous and are considered to be a world heritage site by UNESCO. 

How to reach? Mumbai to Ajanta caves is 456 kms. One can go by train from Mumbai to Aurangabad.

3. Lonar Crater Lake

Lonar Lake or Lonar Crater Lake is situated near Bhuldhana district , Maharashtra. What makes it interesting is that it was formed because of a meteor. Lonar lake has been studied by many geologists, astrologers and archaeologists. It is also surrounded by many temples and the Daitya Sudan temple, which is one of the oldest temples in the area.

How to reach? Shegaon is the nearest station. It is an eight hours journey via road from Mumbai.

4. Daulatabad Fort

Daulatabad Fort is 5-6 kms away from Ajanta caves. This fort has an interesting history and is really very old! The fort's architecture will take you back in the history.

How to reach? One can go by air and rail. Road travel is not advisable as the main idea is to trek.

5. Kaas Plateau
 

Declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO (United Nation Education, Science and Cultural Organisation) Kaas plateau is a long stretched land covered with colourful wild flowers. It is situated in Western Ghats of Sahayadri and is approximately 22 kilometers  away from Satara district. If you are a nature lover it should be on the top of your must-visit-places list. The best time to visit Kaas Plateau is during monsoon and post-monsoon period.

How to reach? One can take a train from Mumbai to Satara (256 kms). Car is not advisable as parking is not allowed.
