Dredging Corp overhaul round the corner

The Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) is likely to go in for an overhaul in the next six months after the appointment of a
new chairman and managing director.

The Union shipping ministry has plans to prepare a blue-print to strengthen the DCI, the integrated dredging and marine service provider.

K Mohandas, shipping secretary, told DNA, “DCI needs a new set of dynamism instilled into it. We will review the corporate plan of the organisation. It should be able to take up projects at all the ports, whether private or government-owned. We would like it to bid more aggressively and an enabling plan will soon be charted out. The participation of DCI in tenders would also help get better rates from other contenders.”

He, however, ruled out an expansion of the board.

“The process of organisational overhaul will be completed in the next six months,” Mohandas said.

The public enterprises selection board will soon invite applications for the post of CMD, which has been vacant after the ministry repatriated current chairman S S Tripathi back to the Vishakhapatnam Port Trust.

The mini ratna public sector enterprise logged profit after tax of Rs70.05 crore in 2009-10 compared to Rs46.37 crore for the previous year.

The company’s earning per share for 2009-2010 stands at Rs25.02 compared to Rs16.56 for the previous year.

The company, last month, entered into a contract with IHC, Dredgers BV, The Netherlands, for design, construction and supply of Trailer Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) at a total cost of about Rs500 crore. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in

September 2014. Last April, the company had signed a Rs1000 crore pact for two TSHDs to be delivered in December 2012 and 2013.
