Do you know Indian Railways is giving 10% discount on some of its tickets? If not, then we tell you how you can avail this discount. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, most trains are running with considerable number of vacant seats. To minimize this loss, Railways is giving discount to its passengers so that its seats are not empty and it does not have to bear losses.

According to the new rules, before the scheduled departure of a train, which has empty berths, railways will give 10% discount on those seats. You can avail this benefit if you book a vacant seat half an hour before the train's departure.

Meaning, if the seats in the train are empty and you take a ticket through online booking (IRCTC) or from counter, half an hour before the departure of the train, you will get a discount of 10%. This facility is now available in all special trains including intercity chaircars.

In some routes, passengers are not getting confirmed tickets, whereas in many other routes there is scarcity of passengers. Due to this railways has to either cancel those trains or their trips are being reduced.

Actually, Indian Railways had started this rule of 10% discount on vacant seats back in January 1, 2017, in trains like Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi. After this, the railways introduced this facility in all reserve class trains.

How you will get this discount on train tickets, the railway has already cleared it before.

1. 10% discount will be given on the basic fare of the last ticket after the first chart is made
2. There will be no exemption in reservation fees, superfast charge and service tax. Passenger will have to pay for it.
3. 10% discount will also be available on those vacant seats which TTE will allot.
