Assembly Election Results 2018 Live: Counting of votes in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Telangana

2018 Vidhan Sabha Chunav Result Live: Over 8,500 candidates are contesting the elections in 678 assembly seats in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Telangana.

Assembly Election Result 2018 LIVE: Counting of votes for Assembly elections in five states - Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Telangana -was done today. Over 8,500 candidates are contesting the elections in 678 assembly seats in the five states. While five states carry a total 679 seats but due to the death of a candidate in Rajasthan, polling was countermanded on one seat.

Congress has won in Rajasthan and Chhhattisgarh and is set to win in Madhya pradesh. TRS has won in Telangana and MNF in Mizoram achieved victorious. 

PM  Modi tweeted humbly accepting defeat. He said, " We accept the people’s mandate with humility.  I thank the people of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan for giving us the opportunity to serve these states. The BJP Governments in these states worked tirelessly for the welfare of the people.

Modi further said,"Congratulations to the Congress for their victories. Congratulations to KCR Garu for the thumping win in Telangana and to the Mizo National Front (MNF) for their impressive victory in Mizoram.The family of BJP Karyakartas worked day and night for the state elections. I salute them for their hardwork."

In a philosophical note, PM said, "Victory and defeat are an integral part of life" PM Modi also said, "Today’s results will further our resolve to serve people and work even harder for the development of India."

Rahul Gandhi said at presser in Cong HQ:  “We have beaten the BJP in MP, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.    I want to thank the chief ministers who have worked in these states fir the work done over their terms.    We now have a lot of work to do – for the youth of the states, farmers, shopkeepers.    

He had: "We are going to provide these states with a government they can be proud of.  Central question being asked by the youth is how does the government give them jobs?  There is a feeling amongst the people that what was promised by Mr Modi wasn’t delivered. Want to thank all the people who have supported the Congress party, it is a victory of the Congress workers who has fought under difficult circumstances: Rahul Gandhi

With a resurgent Congress party, it will become very difficult for the BJP and the PM to win the next elections; jobs and farmers' problems are the central issues. There is a feeling that what the PM had promised about the economy hasn’t been fulfilled. The opposition is united and will fight together. Ideology of the SP, BSP is different from the BJP and is more aligned to Congress.  No issue over chief minister - that will happen smoothly”                                            

Rahul Gandhi said: “EVM question is a generic query - there are problems with EVMs universally and even if we have won these polls, there is a central issue that remains. If the EVMS are manipulated, then elections can be manipulated. US and other countries have said they don’t want an EVM and the question on EVMs isn't off the table.”

He added: “PM was elected on three platforms -- employment, corruption and farmers. Now people are asking what has been done -- corruption in the Rafale deal is a reality and that will come out.”

These five Assembly elections would be crucial for the BJP as it gears up for the Lok Sabha election next year and is in power in three of these states Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. While the Congress is in power in Mizoram, Telangana Rashtra Samithi ruled Telangana before the Assembly was dissolved.

Exit polls on December 7 predicted a Congress win in Rajasthan, while survey agencies were seemed to be divided over outcomes in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. According to exit polls, the TRS is likely to retain the state while Congress may lose Mizoram, the last northeastern state it ruled. 

While voting in these Telangana and Rajasthan was conducted on December 7, Chhattisgarh went to polls in two phases on November 12 and 20. Polling in Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram was held on November 28.

The election exercise will come to close today with the counting of votes which began at 8 am. Here are the live updates on results in five states:

Madhya Pradesh assembly election results 2018 live: Fate of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan's bid for his fourth term in office will be known today with counting of votes for the state's 230 assembly seats scheduled to begin at 8 am, while the challenger Congress expects to return to power after a 15-year gap. Exit polls have predicted a close race between the BJP and the Congress, though leaders from both parties have routinely claimed their respective victories.

Voting for 199 of the total 200 assembly seats in the state took place on December 7. The counting of is taking place at 35 centres including two centres each in Jaipur and Jodhpur, Rajasthan Chief Election Officer Anand Kumar told reporters Monday. Voting trends and result will be telecast at public places for the first time in the state through 350 LED screens, he added.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje is looking for another term in Rajasthan while the Congress is hoping for return in the state it lost to the BJP in 2013. In 2013 assembly election, BJP had won 163 seats, Congress 21, BSP 3, NPP 4 and independents and others 9 seats.

Counting of votes is being held today for the Chhattisgarh Assembly polls, being viewed as a prestige battle for three-term Chief Minister Raman Singh of the BJP and the opposition Congress' fight for resurgence. Tight security arrangements have been made at the counting centres in all 27 districts, particularly the Naxal-affected ones, where voting was held in two phases on November 12 and 20 to elect a new 90-member Assembly.

This time, the coalition between Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), former chief minister Ajit Jogi's Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) and Communist Party of India (CPI) has added another dimension to the electoral politics of the state which has been dominated by the BJP and the Congress. Several exit polls have predicted a neck-and-neck fight between the big two and some have projected victory for the Rahul Gandhi-led party.

After being in political wilderness for two assembly terms, rebel-turned-politician Zoramthanga is back with a bang as he led the MNF to a thumping victory in the state's elections. MNF returned to power in Mizoram after 10 years Tuesday, capturing 26 seats in the 40-member Assembly and inflicting a humiliating defeat on the Congress. 

Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla lost from both constituencies he was contesting from. He was defeated by MNF's TJ Lalnuntluanga by 1049 votes in Champhai South. While Thanhawla polled 4163 cotes, Lalnuntluanga received 5,212 votes. Thanhawla (5071) lost to ZPM's chief ministerial candidate Lalduhoma (5481 votes) in Serchhip.

Counting of votes is being taken up on Tuesday morning to decide the fate of 1,821 candidates trying their luck for 119 assembly seats. While the BJP has hinted at supporting K Chandrasekhar Rao's TRS in forming the government if it fell short of a majority, the Congress-led 4-party People's Front, met Governor ESL Narasimhan and requested that the alliance be treated as a "single entity" in the event of a hung assembly.

Though most exit polls have forecast an easy win for the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, some predicted a keen contest between it and the Congress-led "Praja Katumi", which also comprises the TDP, CPI and the newly formed Telangana Jana Samithi.
