Three army men were killed and three others injured when militants ambushed their convoy in Mulu Chitragam village in South Kashmir's Shopian district on Thursday. A woman was also killed in the firing.

Police said the incident occurred when a joint party of 44 Rashtriya Riffles and Police were returning to base after conducting a cordon and search operation at Kungnoo, Shopian. Police said the cordon and search operation (CASO) concluded without any arrest or recovery.

"While returning from Kungnoo, the CASO party was attacked by unknown militants at Mulu Chitragam at about 2 am, resulting in injuries to six army personnel including two officers. Three of them later succumbed to their injuries", a police spokesman said.

The police said that one woman Taja Begum also died after she was hit by a stray bullet inside her house during the crossfire.

This is the fourth time that the army has suffered casualties in Kashmir during the last few weeks. On February 12, two army men were killed and three others injured in an encounter with highly entrenched militants at Frisal village of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. Two civilians were also killed.

On February 14, four of its soldiers including a major were killed and 11 others, including a Major and Commandant of 45th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), sustained injuries in two separate encounters in North Kashmir.
