Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope's brilliant knocks helped West Indies secure a comfortable eight-wicket victory over India in the first ODI at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday in Chennai.

With this win, the visitors have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

Upon winning the toss, Windies skipper Kieron Pollard opted to bowl first.

India got off to a very poor start as they lost three early wickets. KL Rahul was the first one who was sent back to the dressing room for 6 runs by Cottrell as India were reduced to 21/1.

Skipper Virat Kohli (4) was the next victim of the Windies pacer as India lost Rohit Sharma also after few moments for 36 runs.

India were 80/3 when Shreyas Iyer joined Rishabh Pant in the middle and the duo knitted together a blockbuster partnership to bring the home side back into the game.

The duo managed to put up a 114-run stint for the 4th wicket and brought up their maiden ODI 50s as well.

Iyer played an innings of 70 runs off 88 runs before losing his wicket to Joseph while Pollard brought an end to Pant's 71-run innings.

Kedhar Jadhav and Ravindra Jadeja came in and built a quickfire partnership of 59 runs for the sixth wicket.

Jadhav managed to smash 40 runs while Jadeja added 21 runs to help India hoist a score of 287/8 after 50 overs.

On the chasing of 288, West Indies lost Sunil Ambris for 9 runs as Deepak Chahar gave an early breakthrough for India.

However, Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer formed a class-oozing partnership of 218 runs for the second wicket.

Hetmyer smashed 139 runs off 106 balls, hitting 11 boundaries and 7 sixes on his way to his 5th ODI ton.

Mohammed Shami dismissed Hetmyer in the 39th over as Nicholas Pooran came in and added 29* runs as West Indies finished on 291/2 after 47.5 overs.

Hope stayed unbeaten in the end on 102 and guided Windies to an 8 wicket win with 13 deliveries to spare in the end.

Two major wickets for Sheldon Cottrell. First KL Rahul departs for 6 and then Virat Kohli goes for 4. It's now getting clear why Pollard chose to field first.

At 122 kph delivery on a back of a length, it was down the leg-side and Rahul was beaten by the lack of pace. He went to whip the ball through square leg, but it gets a leading edge and pops up in the air. Hetmyer, who is at mid-wicket takes the catch!

As for Kohli, Cottrell cleverly changes the pace of his delivery and it was slightly wide. Kohli wanted to dab it to the third man, however, he plays it down the wrong line and the ball inside edges back onto his stumps.
