It was a perfect day for England despite India skipper Virat Kohli showing resilience in the second innings. The England bowlers dominated the hosts right from the start of the final day. With this win, England has taken a 1-0 lead in the four-match Test series. 

The win over India in the first Test has also propelled England to the top of the ICC World Test Championship standings.

A total of 120 points is up for grabs and this is the final series in the current ICC World Test Championship cycle for both sides. For England to reach the final and face New Zealand in the final, they have to win by a margin of at least 3-0 or 4-0 in order to qualify for the final.

He later went on to even take the wicket of Rishabh Pant making India lose all hope even of a draw.

It was Jack Leach and Anderson's combined performance that hogged the limelight for the visitors. Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin stitched an important 54-run stand before Leach broke the partnership.

 

Jack Leach continued from where he left off the other night. Leach sent back Cheteshwar Pujara (15) in just the seventh over of the final day.

 

It is 50th Test wicket for Leach and that is good bowling from the English bowlers.

5. Dead ball drama

There was a unique sight on the field when Ishant Sharma was batting in the 57th over. After Jofra Archer bowled it seemed that Ishant had a hit-wicket.

 

England players were celebrating the fall of the wicket but Ishant remained at the crease and stated that he was far away from the wicket. The stump was also uprooted slightly as the bails fell and England were sure that Ishant had lost the wicket. 

 

However, on-field umpire pointed took a review and when the third umpire looked closely, it was found that the bails had fallen before the ball was hit. 

 

Ishant survived and the third umpire declared him as not out. The umpire also declared the delivery as a dead ball.
