After battling a slew of controversies and delays, Kangana Ranaut's magnum opus 'Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi' finally hit the theatres on January 25 and took off to a great start at the box office.

Co-directed by Kangana and Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi, the film got a decend opening of Rs 8.75 crore on Friday despite a clash with Nawazuddin Siddiqui's 'Thackeray'. On Day 2, the historical drama witnessed a remarkable growth of 106% as it collected over Rs 18 crore.

'Manikarnika', also starring Ankita Lokhande, Danny Dengzopa, Atul Kulkarni, Zeeshan Ayub and Jisshu Sengupta, was released on over 3000 screens.

Critics have unanimously hailed Kangana Ranaut's portrayal of the warrior queen, although the film itself has received mixed reviews.

DNA film critic Meena Iyer gave the film 4 out of 5 stars and wrote in her review, "Kangana, who wears two hats — that of the protagonist and the co-director — displays a certain maturity on both counts. As a queen, she displays steely resolve, managing to infuse life into her Laxmibai. The 20-something, for whom the nation came before self, is the kind of martyr you salute with pride. As a director, she shares credit with Krish (of 'Gabbar Is Back' fame) and has assuredly contributed to this big-ticket outing."

Standing tall at Rs 26.85 crore, 'Manikarnika' has emerged as the clear winner at the box office, defeating Nawazuddin Siddiqui's 'Thackeray' by a wide margin. The biopic on Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray, which released in about 2000 screens on January 25, only managed to garner Rs 16 crore in two days.

In terms of a film fronted by an actress, 'Manikarnika' (Friday: Rs 8.75 crore) is the fifth highest opener after Deepika Padukone's 'Padmaavat' *(Rs 19 crore) and Sonam Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor’s 'Veere Di Wedding' (over Rs 10.4 crore). Other films on the list are Kangana’s 'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' (Rs 8.61 crore), Priyanka Chopra’s 'Mary Kom' (Rs 8.32 crore) and Sunny Leone’s 'Ragini MMS 2' (Rs 7.93 crore).

The film's second day numbers (Saturday: Rs 18.10 crore) are the highest a woman-led Hindi film has ever witnessed on a single day. This is also the highest second day collection of Kangana's career.

Given the film’s budget (an estimated Rs 90 crore), 'Manikarnika' needs to double its collection in the coming week. The film has received mixed reviews but looking at the positive word of mouth, it is most likely to cross the coveted Rs 100 crore mark in the next few days.
