In Pics: Mahira Khan apologises for missing Pakistan 2018 Elections after massive online backlash

The entire incident began when Mahira posted a picture on her Instagram page. The picture was of her son at what-looked-like a foreign location. She had previously commented that due to some unavoidable work commitments, she wouldn't be able to vote in the Pakistan 2018 Elections. Soon after, the comments section of the post was flooded with people lambasting her for not being faithful to her country and going away when she should be voting. She captioned the picture "Life, as I know it".

Mahira then posted another picture with the Pakistani flag and apologised to her fans and everyone else for not being there in the country to cast her vote, urging others to go and vote instead. She wrote "As much as I want to be there tomorrow, it is unfortunate that I can not be. There was absolutely no way to delay my work commitment which was scheduled months in advance, I tried my best. And so with a heavy heart I will not be voting this year. I urge all of you to get out and vote!! May this year bring the change we all have been waiting to see. InshAllah. Pakistan zindabad!!! #nayapakistan". She disabled the comments section for this post.

People, however, took to the previous post to comment on the apology, with some still criticising her by saying that the election dates were announced well in advance, while others stuck up for her and explained that missing one election wasn't that big of a deal. The 33-year old actress also received some support from her Indian fans, who first saw her in her 2017 Bollywood debut, Raees, opposite Shah Rukh Khan. The film was a huge success and Mahira was named the highest earning actress for 2017's first quarter.

Mahira Khan's name was last brought up just a few days ago, when another Pakistani actress Saba Qamar received backlash for some leaked pictures of her, that showed her smoking in a sheer shirt. Many people compared Saba to Mahira, saying that both were letting down their religion for wearing revealing clothes and smoking. Mahira was the recipient of similar backlash earlier, when a few pictures of her were leaked in which she was seen smoking with Ranbir Kapoor in a backless dress. The said pictures not only gave way to rumours of Mahira dating Ranbir, but the actress was also slut-shamed for her clothing.

Regardless, since her debut in Bollywood, Mahira Khan has received positive recognition for her sense of fashion and overall style. Recently, Mahira made headlines for her appearance on bridal magazine 'Brides Today' with Humsafar co-star, Fawad Khan. Fawad and Mahira starred together on Humsafar for its entire run, and the internet went bonkers over their reunion.

Mahira also made it to several best-dressed lists earlier this year when she appeared at the Cannes Film Festival 2018. She was named one of the most fashionable celebrities at the event alongside Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, and became the first Pakistani actress to debut at the Cannes Film Festival.
