External affairs minister S M Krishna today expressed satisfaction over the safety of Indian students in Australia as he met the premier of New South Wales and members of the Indian community.
     
Krishna said he was happy with what he has heard from NSW premier Nathan Rees after he met him here.
     
"Indians by and large are most welcome in Australia," Krishna said according to an ABC report.
     
Yadu Singh, a representative for Indian students, who also met the minister along with a few students said he was told about the situation here.
     
"There were request made to him to help the students in getting resolution to the current issue of exploitation of these students," he said.
     
"It (meeting) was about making sure that the quality of education given to those students improves," he said.
     
Krishna said he does not believe Australia was a racist nation while speaking to ABC news after his meeting with Rees.
     
He said he was satisfied with the reassurance he received and will return to India with the premier's message.
     
"Indian students are going to be safe in Australia," he was quoted as saying.
     
Krishna, the first senior Indian dignitary to visit the country after the recent spate of attacks on Indians, is expected to meet prime minister Kevin Rudd and the foreign affairs minister Stephen Smith tomorrow in Cairns.
