A set of damaged clothes and items belonging to Mahatma Gandhi was restored to their original form by INTACH three years ago and sent back to the Sabarmati Ashram where they are on display now.

Some cotton kurtas worn by the Father of Nation, yarns which he used to make shirts and other personal belongings of Gandhi were restored to their past glory under the project 'Saving Gandhi's Legacy'.

"These cotton kurtas were given to INTACH as part of the project and we gave a new lease of life to the outfits which were used by the apostle of peace," Nilabh, Director of INTACH, told journalists during a media workshop here on Wednesday.

These items were restored to their past glory at the INTACH's laboratory in Lucknow.

The revelation comes in the backdrop of a debate over some personal belongings of Gandhi going under the hammer in New York.

Nilabh said the cotton kurtas were torn and had a lot of stains on them when they were handed over to INTACH.

"Our lab people took a lot of effort and time to bring the original glory to these items. Gandhiji's kurtas had lot of stains and some were torn also," he said.

"I was thrilled when I touched the kurta. I can't express my feelings in words," Nilabh said, adding that the stains on the kurtas were removed at the laboratory.

At the first-ever workshop organised for media by INTACH, journalists were taught about the facts related to conservation, protection and preservation.

INTACH Member-Secretary Yogendra Narain said two political parties - BJP and CPI(M) - have acknowledged the letter sent by trust to all outfits asking them to include conservation of heritage structures in their election manifesto.

Conservation experts at the INTACH also expressed concern over Delhi Government continuing with the construction of Commonwealth Games Village on the banks of Yamuna river.

"We are destroying the water security of the city and the place where the Government is constructing the village is the best groundwater recharge area," Samarasingh of the INTACH said.
