IIT-Bombay will now collaborate with Bharat Forge Limited (BFL) to create a unique Mtech programme, which will be specially designed and customised to the needs of BFL. The two years, full-time Mtech (materials, manufacturing and modelling) programme for BFL employees will be trans-disciplinary in nature and will combine several facets of different departments of IIT-B including mechanical engineering, mathematics and metallurgical engineering and materials science among others.

Stressing the need to enhance the much-needed interaction between industry, corporates and educational institutions, IIT-Bombay director Ashok Misra called the collaboration a “major and path-breaking initiative” for IIT-B. “It’ll promote active and high-quality research and mutually benefit both academia and the growing Indian industry. It’s a win-win situation for both,” he said.

IIT-B dean of academic programmes, Professor S Biswas, said that the Mtech programme is only the stepping stone towards a long-term relationship between BFL and the institute. “BFL plans to set up a knowledge technology park close to the company’s Pune campus. It wants to create a state-of-the-art R&D facility there and IIT-B will play a crucial role in this,” said Biswas.

Apart from developing the research and development capabilities of BFL’s employees, the association is aimed at fostering academic and research collaboration between IIT-B and BFL.

The first batch of the Mtech course will commence in July 2009. In the first year of the programme, employees of BFL will be deputed to IIT-B for classroom training on full-time basis, while the second year will enable the employees to do their project work jointly at BFL and IIT-B. While the first batch will have a strength of 25, it may increase over the years, said Biswas.

The MTech programme is the starting point, with BFL planning to create a large pool of PhDs in the subsequent years.
