39 militants surrender in Assam

A total of 39 militants, including 31 ULFA cadre, on Friday surrendered before army and police officers at Red Horns Division headquarters at Rangiya.

RANGIYA (Assam): A total of 39 militants, including 31 ULFA cadre, on Friday surrendered before army and police officers at Red Horns Division headquarters at Rangiya in Assam's Kamrup (Rural) district.
    
The militants surrendered before 21 Mountain Division GOC-in-C Major General Chander Prakash in the presence of Assam Police DIG G P Singh and Kamrup (Rural) Superintendent of Police Debojit Hazarika.
     
Among the 39 militants, 31 are from the ULFA with three from its 109 battalion, five from its 27 Battalion and the remaining from the outfit's crack 709 battalion.
     
The other militants who surrendered include three from Adivasi National Liberation Army (ANLA) and five from Karbi Longri National Liberation Front (KLNLF).
    
The militants deposited 32 pistols and revolvers, a pen pistol, eleven grenades and 30 rounds of ammunitions.
    
Maj Gen Chander Prakash said on the occasion that the militants who have surrendered will be rehabilitated.
    
"The people of Assam and even most of the ULFA cadre want peace, so they have decided to surrender," he said.
    
DIG Singh said the 709 and 27 Battalions have expressed desire to come forward for talks and contacts has been established in this connection.
