MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Government will take suo moto action in the alleged molestation case where two NRI women from California were molested by New Year revellers near a five-star hotel here.

State Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil, who also holds Home portfolio, said here on Wednesday that the government will take suo moto action in the case.

He also said strict instructions have been given to the city Commissioner of Police and the Additional Police commissioner on the issue.

Patil said since the victims are from California, the case will be taken up in the fast-track court.

Police said they will register a case despite none of the victims has come forward to file a complaint.

The incident took place at around 0145 hrs on Tuesday when the two ladies, accompanied by two male companions, walked towards Juhu beach from the nearby hotel in the suburbs.

The group, consisting of up to 70 men, allegedly followed the women from near the hotel and cornered them.

The ladies were allegedly molested despite the presence of their male friends, who were overpowered by the group and were left watching helplessly.
