Anti-Narcotic Cell nabbed five persons with of high quality charas worth Rs5 cr

Five persons were taken into custody for possessing five kgs of “high quality” charas, brought from Jammu and Kashmir and worth Rs5 crore in the international market, in a major swoop in the wee hours on Monday.

Officials of the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai police who conducted the raid said two persons in the group were a big catch—Mushtaq Butt, a Kashmiri and a notorious smuggler in India, and Nasrat Dilawar Khan. The others arrested were a Nigerian Diego Fernandes, and two locals Mohammed Ismail and Reshma Bano.

The five have been booked under the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) and have been remanded in police custody till November 22. While Butt and Khan were arrested from Marine Lines, the others were arrested from Mumbai Central. ANC officials said they laid a trap to nab them after receiving information on the contraband being swapped among them.

“The charas seized in the raid comes from Jammu and Kashmir and is rarely available in the open market. Butt’s arrest will provide us bigger leads,” said a senior official from the ANC. He added that Khan allegedly supplied aphrodisiacs, popularly known as palang tod paan in the western suburbs.

Police will interrogate Butt and Khan to find out their source and their national and possible international links. “Initial interrogation has revealed that Butt was the chief of India in an international drug-smuggling racket,” said the senior official. The police will also probe to establish the local drug-peddling chain and their clientele, added ANC officials.

Police officials said the arrest of another group in October had set the trail and cops had eventually tracked down the druglords. Rizwan Shaikh, Mohammed Madicha, Alima Hakkam, Syed Khan, Kharunissa Badshah and Shenaaz Shaikh were arrested from Virar and close to 12 kilos of charas was seized from the group.
