Ropes in shooter Manavjit Singh as brand ambassador for the programme

KOLKATA: Samsung India on Wednesday flagged off its Olympic Programme of Beijing 2008 with World Shooting champion Manavjit Singh Sandhu as its Olympic brand ambassador.

Samsung, one of the main sponsors of Beijing Olympics 2008 and Olympic Partner for the Torch Relay, also launched the “Spread the Olympic Flame”, a torch bearer nomination programme.

“A very powerful movement like the Olympics and a strong achiever like Manavjit as our partner for Olympic-related programmes in India will make things better,” said H B Lee, president, Samsung South West Asia Regional Headquarters.

As the sponsor for the Olympic Torch Relay 2008, Samsung will invite the public to select torch bearers on behalf of the consumer electronic major and they will join others selected by the Indian Olympic Association (IOC) for the relay in Mumbai.

Sharpshooter Manavjit said: “It is a great opportunity for the public to participate   in the Olympic movement by nominating their role models-people who think they deserve the honour to carry the torch. A participative programme like this will give strong encouragement to the sports movement in the country.”

“In the coming few months, Samsung will carry out several Olympic-related programmes which will generate excitement and build strong support for the Indian team as they prepare for the games,” Lee said.
