MUMBAI: With an aim to prove that a joyous spirit can sweep away everything in its wake, including pain, Arts In Motion, a dance studio presented a show 'Dance With Joy-Challenging Arthritis, Embracing Life' at the St Andrews Auditorium at Bandra in the western suburbs of the city.

'Dance with Joy' is an event which created awareness for people suffering from arthritis. The event was supported by Indian TV stars such as Shweta Salve, Hanif Hilal, Longinus Fernandes, Rajeev Paul and top orthopedic doctors, surgeons and people from the corporate world.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr Harish Bhende said, ''One of the leading causes of disability, arthritis, strikes an estimated 120 million Indians with every one out of ten patients afflicted with some or other forms of arthritis.

Physically the disease can range from mild to severe pain in knee/hip joints, disturbed walking patterns or limping to complete immobility of major joints in the advanced stage.

Psychologically, arthritis is more of a killer than any other chronic ailments as it leads to inertia, dependence, negativity and loss of self esteem. Traditional treatments for arthritis are conservative and relief from pain symptomatic.''

'Dance With Joy' showcased a range of dancing styles and performers both Indian and international like jazz, hip hop, modern dancing, Bollywood jhatka, kid explosion, Arabian dancing, Latin and ballroom dancing and Alianza Flamenca.

As Dr Nirad Vengsarkar an orthopedic surgeon said,'Dance With Joy' is a challenge thrown defiantly to a debilitating and crippling disease, a display of pure guts and true grit. It is the dream of a dancer to infuse  a diseased body with a zest of movement and life.''
