A total of 136 people were checked for blood sugar, high blood pressure and body mass index at a medical camp organised by DNA along with RG Stone Urology and Laparoscopy Hospital.

The camp was organised in housing societies at Bandra Reclamation and Kandivli west. “Most people, who came for the camp, were in the age group of 40 to 60. It is important to monitor lifestyle diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity,” said Sheetal Barnis, corporate relationship manager of the hospital.

High blood pressure with uncontrolled diabetes leads to kidney problems. Around 6% of Mumbai’s population is overweight and more than 3% is estimated to be morbidly obese. Morbid obesity, defined as Body Mass Index of more than 35, is on the rise across the world. Obesity has definite health implications and predisposes to diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems and breathing difficulty.

“I had checked my blood pressure and diabetes about four months ago. Today’s test shows I have diabetes. I get diabetes whenever stress levels are high,” said Milind Thakur, 44, a businessman.

Doctors said it was important to get a regular medical check-up done because of our stressful lifestyle.
