Welcome to the world of Omar Abdullah on the cyberspace!

Tech-savvy Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) chief minister has overcome the predicament and joined cyber-world through Twitter which has become an instant hit in the state.

Omar is back in the cyber world more than two years after he quit blogging on his party National Conference’s website over abuses and hate mails.

“As I finished my last post, I realised that I was filled with dread at the heap of personal abuse I was expecting when I logged on this morning and I was not wrong. I am going back to being an old school politician and you can read what I think in the newspapers,” Omar wrote in his last blog Alvida (good bye) in August 2008.

Omar, who was then a Lok Sabha member and chief of National Conference, had become the first politician from Jammu & Kashmir to blog.  Two and a half years on, Omar is busy tweeting again getting instant response from the people.

From discussing local problems to Egypt situation to killings in Sopore, Omar’s tweets are runaway hit in the state. “I love the way some of my tweets are used by netizens to come at me waving their key pads,” Omar said in one of the tweets.

“Last year, I faced criticism that there is disconnect with people. So I thought that it (Twitter) is the best way to engage the youth. They may or may not agree with me but at least it will create a healthy debate which is a good thing”, Omar told DNA.

Since Omar joined the Twitter, he is being followed by 4,360 people while as he follows only 38.

The interactive CM has struck the chord with the people with many posting their grievances hoping to get instant solution.

“Sir you told me to inform your good self after January 26 relating to SRO…So nice of you to intervene,” tweets Ijtaba Shafi seeking Omar’s intervention in service matters.

Omar’s joining Twitter  has also come a year after an outrage was caused by a smear campaign unleashed against Kashmir’s first family after postings on another social networking site, Facebook. The National Conference took the battle to streets blaming opposition People’s Democratic Party and seeking public apology from its leaders. However the matter died down after June agitation.

“It’s the best way to stay connected with people mostly youngsters, which is the internet savvy generation,” a political observer said.
