Viking ship remains found again under pub cellar

LONDON: Builders in UK uncovered the remains of a Viking ship in a pub cellar. Workers unearthed the vessel in 1938. Worried the discovery would hold up work, the foreman ordered it reburied, but not before one of the builders drew a quick sketch.

That drawing ended up in the hands of the builder’s son who gave it to the local museum in 1991. There it lay, virtually unread, for more than a decade.

Now archaeologists believe it was a 1,000-year-old Viking ship and could be one of Britain’s most significant archeological finds. Viking expert Professor Stephen Harding, of the University of Nottingham, used ground-penetrating radar equipment to pinpoint the ship’s whereabouts. He is now seeking funds to pay for a major archeological dig to excavate the site.
