Plumes of smoke come out of Italy's Mount Etna, one of the world's most active volcanos, as the volcanic mountain erupted lava on Tuesday evening. Europe's most active volcano has been steadily erupting for the last four days, throwing out smoke, ash, and fountains of red-hot lava. The volcano overshadows the city of Catania and has been very active in the last few months. In February, it exploded for days on end, shooting forth spectacular lava fountains and plumes of smoke.

A team of scientists from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), Catania, near Sicily, is constantly monitoring this volcano as this center is close to Mount Etna. Etna is one of three active volcanoes in Italy, along with Stromboli on the Homonymous Island and Vesuvius near the southern city of Naples.

INGV has an underground laboratory where geologist and volcanologist Lucia Miragalia examines the ashes of Mount Etna under the microscope. Lucia has been doing this work for the last 20 years. This time during the study, she made shocking revelations. She told that this ash revealed that the ancient magma present in the stomach of Mount Etna is coming out. That is, this ash is from ancient times. Therefore, this time there is a different smell from the ash and lava that has been coming out since the explosion. Lucia said that she has never seen such a magma in her 20-year career.

An explosion on May 21 was the 19th time since February 16 this year. The volcano settled for about a month and a half but resumed eruptions over the weekend. Last night, it erupted for the fourth time in six days. Fiery balls of molten lava exploded from the southeastern crater illuminating the night sky.

Scientist Giuseppe Salerno said that since February 16, this 10,800 feet high Mount Etna volcano has been spewing lava almost every 48 hours. Many a time the lava reaches a height of 2 km. Because of this, the people in the surrounding residential areas are in a panic. However, no one is willing to leave their city or town. People are staying back in their homes by cleaning the ashes emanating from it.
