GUANGZHOU, China, Dec. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Guangzhou-based American Chamber of Commerce in South China (AmCham South China) today brought a group of more than 100 executives from multinational corporations to Zhang Dong Keng Village to deliver material support to the impoverished villagers.

Under the administration of Zengcheng city, Zhang Dong Keng village has a population of 2,360 individuals, approximately 10 percent of whom are “poverty-stricken” by official measurements. AmCham South China’s collection efforts have resulted in materiel worth over RMB747,280, including clothing, bedding, hygiene products, educational materials and toys.
AmCham South China’s mission to the village was augmented by a team of medical professionals from the Guangzhou Women and Children’s Hospital, who offered on-site medical checkups and consultations to the villagers, free of charge. Doctors determined it would require RMB30,000 in life-saving surgery to fully treat each congenital heart disease--the entirety of which has been covered by AmCham South China, chamber member Mead Johnson Nutrition and the Guangzhou Women and Children’s Hospital. Also, to achieve sustainable development, potential investors and experts were invited to join the delegation for investment inspection during the visit to the village.
As part of its overall charity activities this year, AmCham South China also coordinated the donation of more than RMB600,000 in cash to the Guangzhou Youth Development Foundation—RMB500,000 of which was donated by chamber member Mead Johnson Nutrition alone; these funds will be used to finance medical procedures correcting life-threatening illnesses among orphans in Guangzhou proper.
This is the second consecutive year that AmCham South China has collected donations on behalf of an impoverished village in the relatively affluent Guangdong province; last year’s effort channeled donations valued at RMB630,220 to the village of Meitang.

About Zhang Dong Keng Village
Zhang Dong Keng Village locates in the northern mountainous area of Paitan Town, Zengcheng City, It is surrounded by beautiful mountains and clean rivers and enjoys picturesque landscape and pleasant environment. In total, the village covers 1407 mu of paddy fields, 13,000 mu of mountain (of which, 6000 mu are planted with lychee and persimmon). Under the village there are 10 cooperatives of 433 households with a population of 2360, among which, 43 households with the population of 118 are poverty-stricken.
