Alvida Sushma Swaraj: Nation bids emotional adieu to former EAM, cremated with state honours

Sushma's last rites were performed by her daughter Bansuri Swaraj, as her husband Swaraj Kaushal stood beside his daughter.

Former External Affairs Minister (EAM) Sushma Swaraj was cremated with full state honours at Lodhi crematorium here on Wednesday.

Sushma's last rites were performed by her daughter Bansuri Swaraj, as her husband Swaraj Kaushal stood beside his daughter.

Several politicians from various parties and foreign dignitaries attended the last rites of the late BJP leader. Those in attendance included - Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, working BJP president JP Nadda, Nitin Gadkari, Lal Krishna Advani, leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, and Congress leader Anand Sharma, among others.

Former Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay was also present.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, Congress leader Ashok Gehlot, veteran BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb, Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla, Prime Minister Modi, Venkaiah Naidu and several other dignitaries paid floral tributes to the late BJP leader.

Swaraj was appointed the foreign minister in the first term of Modi government in 2014. She opted out of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections citing health reasons.

An emotional PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday visited former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who passed on Tuesday due to cardiac arrest, to pay his last tributes.

 

Paying his last tribute to former external affairs minister at her residence, PM Modi was witnessed holding back his tears as he was mourning the death of Sushma Swaraj, who was his colleague for decades in politics.

Former external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for abrogating Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir in her last tweet just hours before her demise, saying that she had been waiting to see this day in her lifetime.

 

"Narendra Modi ji - Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime," she said in her last tweet referring to the abrogation of Article 370.

 

 

Her tweet came soon after Parliament approved the resolution ending the special status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

 

This was Sushma Swaraj's last words on a public platform before she passed away due to cardiac arrest on Tuesday night.

Condolences continue to pour in from world dignitaries for former external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj who breathed her last due to cardiac arrest on Tuesday night.

 

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tributes to Swaraj and extended sympathy to her family.

 

"She (Sushma) was a good friend of Bangladesh. With her death, Bangladesh has lost a good friend. Bangladesh will recall her contributions in taking the relationship between the two countries to a new height," Hasina was quoted by bdnews24 as saying.

 

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif also expressed his condolences over Swaraj's demise and recalled his "fruitful" discussions with her.

 

"My deepest condolences to the government and the people of India on the passing of former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. I had many fruitful and useful discussions with her while she held office, and am saddened by her sudden passing. May she forever rest in peace," he tweeted. (Photo: PTI)
