Indian bowlers delivered in a heart-stopping climax to fashion a narrow eight-run victory against Australia in the second ODI after skipper Virat Kohli conjured up a resolute hundred in testing conditions on Tuesday.
All-rounder Vijay Shankar scalped the last two Australian batsmen in the final over in which Australia needed to score 11 runs for a series-levelling win. Shankar had played a good hand with bat as well, scoring quick 46 runs in India's total of 250.
Handing the ball to medium pacer Shankar at the make-or-break situation was a bold decision by skipper Kohli, who had the option of employing Kedar Jadhav as well.
Chasing 251, Australia were 240 for eight when Shankar got rid of dangerous Marcus Stoinis (52) in the very first ball of the 50th over and castled Adam Zampa in the third ball to trigger celebrations in the Indian camp.

1. Vijay Shankar gets out in unlucky fashion

Vijay Shankar (46 off 41) added 81 runs for the fourth wicket with Virat Kohli but he was unfortunately run out when he backed up too far at the non-striker's end to a Kohli straight drive. Shankar looked in great touch hitting India's first six and also five boundaries.
Shankar looked set for his maiden ODI fifty. However, his innings was cut short in unfortunate fashion as he was run out at non-striker's end. Kohli's straight drive touched the fingers of bowler Adam Zampa before hitting the wickets at the non-striker's end. Shankar had no chance to return to his crease.

2. Virat Kohli hits 40th century

Captain Virat Kohli Tuesday struck his 40th ODI hundred to play a major role in India's 8-run victory but he sought to downplay his achievement and instead lauded his team-mates for the win.
"It felt good (to get to 40 ODI hundreds) but it is just a number. It feels good to win games for India," Kohli said after the match.
Kohli hit 116 from 120 balls to guide India to 250 all out from 48.2 overs after being put into bat. He is only second batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to score 40 ODI centuries.

3. When MS Dhoni made a fan chase him

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is among the fastest runners between the wickets in international cricket. On Tuesday, the pace came in handy as he tried to dodge a fan, who breached security in pursuit of a hug from the charismatic former captain. Dhoni did embrace the man but only after making him run for it.
The 37-year-old was taking position behind the stumps when India began their defence of 250 against Australia in the second ODI here. At that moment, a fan broke through the security to run on to the field wanting a hug from the World Cup-winning former skipper. A grinning Dhoni quite literally played hard to get while the rest of the Indian team enjoyed the little moment before the second innings of the match got underway. The man, clad in a white T-shirt, ran after his idol, who relented after a few seconds and embraced him. The fan also touched Dhoni's feet before he was escorted out by a Vidarbha Cricket Association volunteer and a few security personnel.

4. Bumrah gets two wickets in three balls

India looked trouble with Marcus Stionis and Alex Carey going great. The pair attacked Kuldeep Yadav in his final two overs. However, Yadav redeemed himself a little as he bowled Carey in the final over of his spell.
Pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is ever-reliable in death overs, then dismissed Nathan Coulter-Nile and Pat Cummins in space of three balls in the 46th over and conceded just one run in the 48th over, playing a crucial role in India's win.

5. Vijay Shankar delivers under pressure

All-rounder Vijay Shankar was not having the best day with the ball. He had spent 13 runs in the only over he has bowled before getting the ball for the final over of the match. With 11 runs to defend, Handing the ball to medium pacer Shankar at the make-or-break situation was a bold decision by skipper Kohli, who had the option of employing Kedar Jadhav as well.
However, Shankar didn't disappoint as he scalped the last two Australian batsmen of the first three ball. He trapped Marcus Stoinis leg-before-wicket off very first ball. He then clean bowled Adam Zampa on the third ball to end the match in India's favour.
