Bangladesh staged an impressive comeback and emerged victorious over Afghanistan by a margin of 89 runs in the Asia Cup 2023 clash held in Lahore on Sunday.
Opting to bat first, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto displayed exceptional batting prowess, each scoring a century, as Bangladesh amassed a colossal total of 334/5 in their allotted 50 overs. Mehidy, who was promoted to open the innings, struck a magnificent 112 runs off 119 deliveries before being forced to retire hurt. Meanwhile, Shanto showcased his skills with a quickfire 104 runs off 105 balls.
In response, Afghanistan faced an early setback when Shoriful Islam dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a mere 1 run off 7 deliveries. Rahmat Shah and Ibrahim Zadran then steadied the Afghan innings, forging a solid partnership of 78 runs for the second wicket. However, their efforts were thwarted by Taskin Ahmed, who dismissed Rahmat Shah for 33 runs off 57 balls. Ibrahim Zadran showcased his batting prowess, accumulating an impressive 75 runs off 74 deliveries, until his innings was abruptly ended by a remarkable one-handed catch by Mushfiqur Rahim. Hashmatullah Shahidi took charge after Ibrahim's departure, contributing a valuable 51 runs off 60 balls before falling victim to Shoriful's bowling. Ultimately, Afghanistan's innings came to a close at 245 runs in 44.3 overs.
