Touted to be the most expensive film of Shah Rukh Khan's career, 'Zero' has been pronounced an 'underperformer' by the trade gurus. Made at a reported Rs 200 crore budget, the Aanand L Rai directorial has only managed to earn Rs 81.32 Crore in India, so far.

The film, that also stars Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in lead roles, was expected to witness an uptick in numbers on Christmas day and it did see a slight rise on Tuesday, however it wasn't enough to make it cross the coveted Rs 100 Cr club.

Here's a detailed low down on the box office collections of 'Zero'

Considering its big release across 4,380 screens and the buzz around the movie, Zero's Day 1 box office numbers left the distributors shocked and heartbroken. The film managed to mint only Rs 20.14 crore on Friday. As per reports, it registered an average occupancy of up to 45-50% in the morning shows.

Salman Khan's 'Race 3' and Aamir Khan's 'Thugs Of Hindostan' may have been rated among the worst films of 2018 but they recorded better occupancies on Friday than SRK's 'Zero'.

According to analysts, trade was expecting a Rs 30 crore opening for 'Zero' but that clearly didn't happen. But, the real shock came on Saturday and Sunday when collections failed to grow despite Khan's presence.

About Zero's box office performance, noted trade ananlyst Taran Adarsh tweeted:

'Zero' showcases the story of a vertically-challenged man named Bauua Singh, who falls in love with a specially-abled scientist named Aafia Yusufzai Bhinder (played by Anushka Sharma). The film stars Katrina Kaif as an alcoholic actress named Babita Kumari, who is described as "Hindustan ka sapna". Their love triangle spread over Meerut, Mumbai and New York ends with Bauua landing on Mars!

While critics and audiences appreciated Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma's individual performances, most of them found the storyline of the film flawed and incoherent.

DNA's film critic Meena Iyer wrote in her review, "While the film has stand-alone witty, wacky and audacious moments, it fails to add up to a whole. Like its three lead characters -- Bauua, Aafia and Babita -- each of who is inadequate, the script too has several inconsistencies."

"You should watch 'Zero' for Shah Rukh Khan. His swag, his sincerity and his willingness to go-beyond-vanilla (arms stretched) is worth it," wrote Iyer.

6. Should team 'Zero' be scared of Ranveer Singh's 'Simmba'?

Rohit Shetty's 'Simmba' starring Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan is scheduled to release next Friday (December 28th), leaving only two days for 'Zero' to make the most of it. Shetty's action-packed films usually tend to do well at the box office.

It remains to be seen whether Aanand L Rai will actually be able to 'rectify' Shah Rukh's relation with his fans with 'Zero', as promised.
