'Uri: The Surgical Strike' Box Office Collection Day 1:Vicky Kaushal's war-drama gets a decent opening, earns Rs 8.20 Cr

Vicky Kaushal's 'Uri: The Surgical Strike' finally hit the screens on January 11 and it minted an impressive Rs 8.20 crore on day one. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the latest figures of the film on Twitter with a post that read, “#2019 begins with a bang… #UriTheSurgicalStrike embarks on a flying start… Should witness growth on Day 2 and Day 3… Fri ₹ 8.20 cr. India biz. #Uri.”

The film is based on the surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army on seven terrorist launchpads across the Line of Control on September 29, 2016, in retaliation to a terrorist attack on an army camp at Uri earlier that month.

According to Box Office India, 'Uri' witnessed 30-40 per cent more occupancy than Anupam Kher's 'The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh' in the morning shows. Vicky Kaushal and Yami Gautam starrer raked in a respectable Rs 8.20 crore on Friday.

Yami Gautam plays the character of an intelligence officer, Pallavi Sharma, in the film. “There is nothing larger than life about it (the role). The whole idea was to keep it as real as possible. At the same time, there were some lines where I had to be very specific as the information gathered by an intelligence officer is specific and you can’t improvise on that,” she said in an interview.

Television actor, Mohit Raina, popularly known as ‘Mahadev’ makes his Bollywood debut with RSVP’s 'Uri: The Surgical Strike'. Mohit plays the key role of captain Karan Kashyap in the film. He underwent intense training to shed a few kilos to look apt for his character.

'Uri' makes it clear from the word go as to which political party it caters to and makes no secret of it. The fact that it got released ahead of 2019 elections, has made many label it as a propaganda film.

 

However Vicky, in an interview with IANS, called the surgical strikes "something we all are proud of". He also refuted allegations that it glorifies the ruling party and said, "Aditya Dhar, the director and writer of the film, is very passionate about army, and he has made this film as a tribute to the army and nobody else.
