The century-old colonial mansion next door to US president Barack Obama's home in Chicago has been sold for $1.4 million, a real estate agent said on Wednesday.

"I can't tell you anything about the buyer. They want to keep their identity quiet," said agent Matt Garrison, revealing they were from Chicago and planned to make renovations.

It was not an easy sale.

Given the proximity of the house to the president's, anyone coming and going will pass through security checkpoints. Garrison was not told what the security measures involved.

"They do what they do," he said.

The eight-bedroom, 6,000 square foot (557 sq metre) home was put up for sale by a Chicago couple months ago. The website http:www.5040greenwood.com that explained its features -- including stained-glass windows and ornate fireplaces, woodwork and plaster detail -- attracted more than 100,000 visitors.

Garrison said he led a couple of dozen interested parties through the three-story brick home.
