Five years ago this week Wayne Rooney, then 18, scored a stunning hat trick in Manchester United’s 6-2 win over Fenerbahce in the Champions League.

Now, 247 games and 104 goals later, Rooney is firmly established as a world great and a man all Manchester United fans are looking at to lead them on to further glory.

According to The Sun, he aims to do exactly that for another decade or more, citing the incredible form of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs as his inspiration to go on and on.

Rooney, 23, said: "I hope I'm still at United when I'm the same age as guys like Ryan, Scholesy and Gary Neville.

"I've always said that as long as United want me, I'm happy to stay. I don't want to leave. I love the club and have no reason to even think about moving. I'm sure I'll be here for a long time," he added.

Rooney hopes to wow the fans tomorrow night as United take on German champions Wolfsburg in their first home game of this season's Champions League campaign.
