On the eve of the D-Day in Mumbai Cricket Association’s biennial elections, both the groups — Bal Maddhalkar — headed by Ravi Sawant and the Sharad Pawar group are expectedly at loggerheads.

Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar retained his president post unopposed. New entrant Vilasrao Deshmukh and Dilip Vengsarkar have also won the vice presidents’ posts unopposed.

Now all eyes will be on the honorary treasurer’s post. The contest is between two former colleagues and bigwigs in the local cricket — Sawant and Prof Ratnakar Shetty, BCCI chief administrative officer and the incumbent.

Another keen contest will be for the joint secretary’s post between independent candidate Lalchand Rajput and Pawar group’s PV Shetty and Hemant Waingankar.

Sawant had resigned from vice president’s post couple of weeks before the elections blaming Shetty for influencing Pawar’s decision over an issue. Sawant, who is contesting for the treasurer’s post, was also against Shetty holding two posts.

On Thursday evening, Shetty, who had so far remained quite, lashed out at Sawant during an election meeting at the Garware Club.

“I started off as a senior executive-in-charge of the BCCI in 2003 when I was the secretary of MCA. He had no problems then, as he was the vice president. Now when his four terms as vice-president has ended he has started raking up these issues. Why didn’t he do it earlier?”

The MCA members are unhappy with the influx of politicians within the organisation. Shetty defended it, saying: “Had it not been for SK Wankhede’s (a politician) efforts we would not have had our identity and would have still been under the Cricket Club of India.

“They are the ones who can help us with their power. Earlier we had Manohar Joshi and now Mr Pawar. We have the best of the facilities today and our finances have improved drastically. We have over Rs 85-90 crores in our coffers,” said Shetty.

Incumbent managing committee member Javed Rizvi, who successfully organised the All India Inter-University Rohinton Baria Trophy, is in fray for his third term in the managing committee. He said the Pawar group needs to come back in power. “We have to take Mumbai cricket forward and we are on our way to achieving our goals.”
